Reflections on Andy Gambrell
The biggest takeaway that I had from that dance performance was dimensionality. Andy had talked about his experience with space during the process of creating the dance, and it really stuck out to me in the performance. The most impactful moments of that performance were the moments when the dancers interacted with space, and I think the two "rollers" were the best example of that. Bringing art off the page is really hard, and also to do it with the multiple dancers is hard too. I think the only thing I questioned was the choice to have the dancers facing away and towards the viewer. The choreographer may have talked about it during her talk, but I remember being underwhelmed by it. The way she talked about the process of curating the dance reinforced that.
